"An embrace between the Muslim leader of Northern Cyprus and the Pope. This is how the second day of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the divided island concluded. The correspondant Lucio Brunelli.
"The Pope in ‘no man's land’. The procession from the Nunciature to the Holy Cross Church is inside the borders dividing Greek and Turkish Cyprus. Barbed wire and UN soldiers stationed on rooftops reflect the still open wounds of the war of '74. One of the most symbolic images of this journey of peace, in addition to the other images, is the venerable Sufi Shaykh Nazim, one of the most authoritative spiritual leaders of the Turkish Muslim community, crossing the Green Line to meet in the ‘no man's land’ with the head of the Catholic Church.
"I am very happy for this meeting with His Holiness," he tells us at the exit."We joked about our age, we hugged and promised each other prayers. The Pope is one of the wisest men of the world". Words so significant especially after the assassination of Monsignor Padovese in Turkey, and the moderate strategy of dialogue with Islam revived in these days of Benedict XVI. The community here, as throughout all the Middle East, is a small minority decimated by massive immigration. The Pope urged Christians not to abandon these lands despite the numerous difficulties, the political conflicts and the limitations on religious freedom.

“Un abbraccio tra il leader musulmano del Nord di Cipro e il Papa. Si è chiusa così la seconda giornata di Benedetto XVI sull’isola divisa in due. L’inviato Lucio Brunelli.
“Il Papa nella terra di nessuno. La processione dalla Nunziatura alla Chiesa della Santa Croce, è nella parte di confine, tra quella greca e quella turca di Cipro. Reticolati e soldati dell’Onu appostati sui tetti, le ferite ancora aperte della guerra del ’74. Una dell immagini più simboliche di questo viaggio di pace insieme a queste altre: il veccio Sufi Nazim uno dei leader spirituali più autorevoli della comunità turco musulmana, varca la linea verde per incontrare, nella terra di nessuno il capo della Chiesa cattolica.
“Sono molto felice per quest’incontro con Sua Santità” ci dice all’uscita, “abbiamo scherzato sulla nostra età, ci siamo abbracciati e promesso preghiere. Il Papa è uno degli uomini più saggi del mondo” Parole tanto più significative dopo l’assassinio in Turchia di Monsignor Padovese, e la strategia mite di dialogo con l’Islam rilanciata in questi giorni da Benedetto XVI. La comunità qui come in tutto il medio oriente sono una piccola minoranza falcidiata da una massiccia immigrazione. Il Papa ha esortato i Cristiani a non abbandonare queste terre nonostante le mille difficoltà, i conflitti politici e le limitazioni alla libertà religiosa.
